This guide gives a general understanding of Interim Visas—what they are, why they exist, who can get one, and how they work. It’s not an exhaustive guide, so if you need help or have questions, please reach out to us.

What is an Interim Visa? An Interim Visa is a temporary entry class visa that allows you to stay lawfully in New Zealand or continue your activities (in the case of work and student visas) while your visa application is being processed by Immigration New Zealand (INZ).

Why Do Interim Visas Exist? The purpose of an Interim Visa is to allow you stay lawfully in New Zealand while your visa application is being processed. When renewing a visa or applying for a different type of visa, you must apply before your current visa expires. But if Interim Visa’s didn’t exist how early should you apply? One month? Six months? What if it takes INZ longer than expected to process your application? Or, if you apply six months early and are approved quickly, you may lose out on the time remaining on your current visa which you’ve already paid for.

Who Can Be Granted an Interim Visa? You may be granted an Interim Visa if:

  • You currently hold a temporary visa (e.g., visitor, student, work but excluding limited) and are applying for another temporary visa while still in New Zealand.

  • You submit your application before your current visa expires.

  • You are an accredited employer renewing your accreditation.

  • You are in New Zealand on a temporary visa and have applied for a Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) visa.

How Can You Apply for an Interim Visa? You can’t apply for an Interim Visa. It’s granted automatically before your current visa expires if you are eligible. There are no additional fees for an Interim Visa. There are some people who may not be granted an Interim Visa, for example, if you are facing deportation or have a character warning, you may not be automatically granted an Interim Visa. An Immigration Officer will make a decision on whether or not to grant one in this instances.
